SQL Governor V15 - what is new

SQL Governor V15 has now been available for some time. This article goes through the new cool features in brief.

Azure PaaS monitoring

SQL Governor V15 now supports monitoring for SQL Managed Instances and SQL databases on PaaS layer of the Microsoft Azure stack. The same performance counters are available and therefore comparable in between Azure and on-premises workloads in the SQL Governor capacity planning module as well. With SQL Governor you can now monitor:

  • On-premises SQL Servers (physical and virtualized)
  • Azure IaaS Virtual Machines
  • Azure PaaS Managed Instances and SQL databases

Automated Azure IaaS storage calculation against Managed Disks

SQL Governor is now able to automatically calculate disk pool recommendations against consolidated SQL Servers against Azure IaaS Managed Disks on RAID 10 configuration. This makes traditionally cumbersome and challenging storage planning easy, precise, and effortless even on bigger data platforms: SQL Governor can recognize the trends and patterns in SQL Server telemetry data, and based on this information suggests the optimal setup for the SQL Servers to be right sized into the Azure cloud. The recommendations are given on source system storage volume- / mount point basis for each Azure data and log disk pool. The calculations can be done from the current state up to 5 years of projected time for each data and log volume based on the trend given for the telemetry data as follows:

  • Disk type
  • Volume
  • Disk pool
  • Pool size
  • Number of pools
  • IOPS (read / write / total)
  • Throughput (read / write / total)
  • Latency

Automated database consolidation storage calculation

SQL Governor offers improved storage calculations for database level consolidation to help understand how different individual databases consume storage for each volume from the current state up to 5 years of projected time for each data and log volume based on the trend given. This makes it effortless to plan your storage needs for each database to guarantee the scale and performance of your system. Database level storage projection telemetry data is as follows:

  • IOPS (read / write / total)
  • Throughput (read / write / total)
  • Latency

Right-sizing Azure IaaS and PaaS workloads

With SQL Governor you can now efficiently right-size existing Azure IaaS virtual machines and PaaS Managed Instances based on actualized resource usage from current state up to 5 years of projected time for each Managed Instance and Azure virtual machine given.

CPU contention alerts

CPU contention is a phenomenon in SQL Servers, typically leading to a server slowdown or even server halt and therefore unavailability situations. That’s why it is very important to be able to identify when this occurs. SQL Governor V15 introduces real-time CPU contention warnings. These warnings are also logged and projected to server right sizing calculation results to understand the risk level on CPU contention while scaling up any SQL Servers.
